History of Lorne
Lorne was built in 1873 by Henry James Campbell who was a prominent linen merchant in Belfast. He named his house Lorne after the valley in Scotland that is traditionally the home of the Campbell Clan. The emblem of the Campbells - the boar's head can still be seen on two marble fireplaces in Lorne.
Following the death of Mr Campbell in 1889, his two sisters remained living in the main house for many more years. Girlguiding Ulster purchased the house and estate in 1946 for £6,000 and began making Lorne habitable again for guiding camps and trainings. Lorne was officially opened on 3rd June 1947 by Her Grace, the Duchess of Abercorn D.B.E who was Ulster Guiding's first Chief Commissioner.
Today Lorne is still the home of Girlguiding Ulster and we have lovingly cared for the beautiful house and grounds for almost 80 years. Lorne Estate is now a leading residential and outdoor centre with 1000's of participants attending each year for overnight stays, camps and outdoor activities.
