Bushcraft Belfast – Outdoor Adventure at Lorne Estate
Learn the Essential Skills of Bushcraft
If you’re searching for bushcraft near Belfast, our Bushcraft Experience at Lorne Estate is the perfect way to reconnect with nature, learn hands-on outdoor skills, and enjoy the great outdoors. Set within our beautiful woodland area, surrounded by trees and rustic natural seating, this experience combines learning, teamwork, and fun — all in one memorable session.
Guided by our experienced instructors, you’ll learn the key principles of bushcraft - from building and lighting campfires to safely managing tools, respecting nature, and leaving no trace behind.
What to Expect
- Your session begins with the group gathered on the woodland benches for a safety briefing. You’ll learn about area safety, clothing checks (hair tied, no loose clothing, appropriate footwear), and how to prepare for the activity ahead.
- The instructor will then introduce the concept of bushcraft, chat with participants to gauge their existing knowledge, and split everyone into smaller groups.
- Each group is assigned a fireplace and challenged to build a campfire using only the natural materials they can find. The instructor will then attempt to light each fire with a single match — a fun test that demonstrates the importance of proper fire construction.
- After this, you’ll regroup to learn about the fire triangle and see a live demonstration of how to light your own campfire safely and effectively.
- Then it’s your turn - with instructor support, you’ll gather materials, build, and light your own fire.
- Once your fire is burning, it’s time for the best part - toasting marshmallows and making s’mores!
- The session finishes with an important lesson on Leave No Trace, teaching participants how to clear and tidy their fire area safely, ensuring respect for the natural environment.
- For older participants (aged 10+), we offer an Axe and Knife Skills add-on, where you’ll learn how to safely use bushcraft tools to process wood - from chopping larger blocks down to kindling. This adds an extra level of challenge and skill for more experienced groups.
Who Can Take Part?
Our activities are for private group bookings from the general public. Bushcraft is suitable for participants aged 7 and over, making it ideal for school groups, youth organisations, families, and even team-building groups looking for a rewarding outdoor challenge.
It’s a fantastic activity for mixed-ability groups and can be easily adapted to suit age and experience - from first-timers learning to light their first fire to older participants mastering safe tool use and advanced fire management.
