Discover Orienteering at Lorne Estate

Discover the excitement of Orienteering at Lorne Estate, where adventure and exploration go hand in hand. Orienteering is an outdoor activity that blends navigation, problem solving, and physical movement; perfect for schools, youth groups, families, and team-building events.

Set within Lorne’s beautiful natural grounds, with a mix of woodland paths, open lawns, and hidden checkpoints, orienteering here offers a truly immersive outdoor experience.

Groups - What to Expect

Group sessions begin at a central meeting point, typically under the big tree on the front lawn. Here, everyone gathers for a quick preparation and safety check (shoes tied, hair back, suitable clothing).

Participants start with a short chat about what orienteering involves and how it works, followed by map-based games to introduce key concepts in a fun and engaging way. Once everyone is confident with the basics, they’re briefed on safety rules for moving around site and split into smaller groups.

Each group is then given a map and sent off to tackle a course suited to their age and ability... finding checkpoints, navigating terrain, and working together to complete the route. It’s fast-paced, adventurous, and always full of energy and laughter!

Schools - What to Expect

When schools visit for dedicated Orienteering Days, the experience is more structured and educational.

Sessions begin with a classroom-style introduction, where pupils learn map-reading skills and the principles of navigation. They then take part in “Star Orienteering”, where they run to a single checkpoint and back — building confidence in finding markers and using their maps correctly.

As the day progresses, students complete shorter, simpler courses, before moving on to longer, more complex routes that include timing and scoring — ideal for teachers who want measurable learning outcomes and skill progression.

This format builds not just navigation skills, but also spatial awareness, independence, and teamwork — making it a fantastic outdoor learning experience.

Orienteering for Younger Adventurers

For our youngest participants, Lorne offers orienteering-inspired activities such as our popular Fairy Trail... a magical introduction to navigation that keeps things fun, safe, and age-appropriate.

These early experiences help younger children (ages 4+) build confidence, independence, and a love for exploring the outdoors.

Who can take part?

Our orienteering activities are available for private group bookings from the general public.

Suitable for participants aged 4 and over, this is one of the most inclusive and adaptable activities at Lorne Estate.
